A new life for paper: tiny seeds beginning to sprout.

Plantable paper is paper with seeds embedded inside it. After using it as an invitation, card or tag, you can plant it to give those seeds a chance to grow. Whether you have received a Myecostudio card or are considering one for your wedding, this guide explains what it is, how to use it and how to care for it when planting.

What is plantable paper?

Also known as seed paper, it combines paper fibres with seeds embedded in the sheet. At Myecostudio, we make our plantable paper by hand using recycled paper and seeds. Its texture and small irregularities are part of its handmade character.

Not all handmade paper contains seeds. Some of our stationery designs are also available on cotton paper without seeds. Before planting a piece, check which option you have chosen.

How to plant seed paper step by step

Prepare a bowl of water, a pot with drainage and potting compost. These steps follow the care we recommend for our paper. If your card includes specific instructions for its seeds, follow those instructions.

1. Soak the paper

Leave the paper in water for 24 to 48 hours so it becomes thoroughly soaked. Soaking helps soften the fibres before you move it into the pot.

2. Transfer it to a pot

Place the damp paper in a pot of compost and cover it lightly with more compost. Handle it gently, especially if sprouts have already appeared. You can also read our planting instructions.

3. Find natural light and a warm spot

Place the pot somewhere warm with natural light. Watch how the compost responds: if it dries too quickly, reconsider the position and how often you water it.

4. Keep it moist without waterlogging

Water gently and regularly to keep the paper and compost moist. Avoid excess water. Germination depends on the seed variety, storage and growing conditions; different pieces may sprout at different times.

Ideas for using plantable paper at your wedding

A plantable invitation lets the story continue after the celebration. Seed paper can also be used for place cards, menus and small wedding favours. Explain that the piece can be planted and include clear planting instructions.

Plantable paper: frequently asked questions

Which flowers will grow?

It depends on the seeds in each paper. Check the product description or the instructions on your card to identify the variety. Our wildflower paper is designed to turn a piece of stationery into a small growing experience.

How long does germination take?

There is no single timescale for all seed papers. Variety, temperature, moisture and storage all affect the result. Keep caring for your pot and allow time before assuming the seeds have failed.

Why is my seed paper not sprouting?

Check whether the paper has dried out, whether water is collecting in the pot and whether it receives enough light and warmth. Also check the instructions for the seed variety. If it is a Myecostudio piece, tell us which product you have and how you planted it so we can help.

How should I store it before planting?

Keep it dry, protected from moisture and excessive heat, and follow the recommendations included with the product. Remember that it contains seeds, so storage matters too.
